The Toshiba Satellite P205-S6287 is a multimedia notebook that is ideal if you are planning to use it for home or small office use. It is quite a sleek looking notebook that has a shiny black lid and I like the look of it. The monitor is 17” and is a very shiny WXGA+ screen with a resolution of 1440x900. I found it really exceptional while viewing DVDs as the images were bright and sharp and there no light leakage but though a 1680x1050 option would have been nice I have no complaints when it comes to the quality of LCD which was just great. I noticed that the LCD is not flushed to the base but dips slightly below and though it is held firmly in place by a sturdy nine inch wide clip that has been molded into the LCD bezel I still worry a little about the sensitivity of the P205 while I’m carrying it. While closing it snapped firmly shut without any problems but I am still a little skeptical about opening it without having the notebook perfectly level to avoid damaging the LCD. It comes with built-in Harman/Kardon speakers so you can expect good sound quality. I have 2 MB of Ram and Core 2 Duo CPU with my Toshiba P205 notebook so you can imagine that I got along pretty well except for anything that was really heavy on the hard disk like high graphic applications. So the performance rating would be 4 out of 5. P205’s Bloatware Experience Index was just another of those laptop software and though it came with a lot many not-so-useful software but its performance for Windows Vista was the smoothest I have seen in laptops of its class. The GMA 950 graphics was a cinch with all the graphical requirements of Vista and I worked with basic video editing software which ran without a squeak as with any machine with a higher GPU. If you visit the Toshiba website you can also configure the P205 with the NVIDIA Go 7600 GPU, at either 128MB or 256MB RAM even if there are no pre-configured graphical models. It uses an Intel 4965 wireless supporting 802.11 a/b/g/n so you will be connected no matter what. There is also a built-in battery management system that saves power and the six cell battery produced around two hours with wireless enabled so that really impressed me too. And since I was constantly testing the hard drive, the screen did not lose its brightness which was a real achievement. But what really was the best was that it did not every heat up and was silent throughout. This is also understandable because of the size of the laptop which is fairly large so it does not accumulate heat because of its heat vents and well-placed innards. Overall, I will say it deserves a 3.5 for its screen, performance, sound, looks and running but the only thing is that there are no integrated graphics which I miss but if you are considering it for home use I would say it is fairly good though a little bit pricey. |
