Used Laptops

Now more and more people buy small and light laptop notebooks instead of desktop computers, and sometimes they purchase used ones because they can’t afford a new one. When you are prepared to buy a used notebook you must take into account the following aspects: 1. The destination of your notebook 2. The processor 3. The operation system installed on the notebook 4. Its weight 5. RAM memory 6. The display 7. The hard disk 8. The optical unit – CD ROM / DVD ROM 9. Things necessary for a laptop 10. Warranty and service 11. Price

Firstly, you must decide what we want to do with the laptop. We may want to use it for office applications, like Microsoft Office, browser web, to visualize photos, without editing them, to watch films at a better resolution. Or maybe you want to install your favorite games, which need a better graphic card. Moreover, it can be useful for a large memory capacity on the hard disk, or we use CDs or DVDs. Will we take with us while traveling or we’ll use it as a desktop computer? After we answered these questions, we decide whether we need a used laptop or a new one.

Besides, we must be careful with the processor of the notebook. Laptops have usually Intel Pentium M processors or AMD Turion 64. Both offer a performance similar to a Pentium 4 processor, which runs with 1 – 1.4 GHz faster). Another option might be Intel Core Duo, a dual – core processor, 667 MHz and 2 MB L2 cache, which promises a performance with about 70% higher than the performance of the previous ones. If you want this kind of processor, you maybe won’t find it in a used notebook, as it can be found in expensive notebooks, which cost about $ 2000 and maybe such a laptop owner won’t sell it, except emergency situations.

You may find used notebooks equipped with Celeron M or AMD Sempron processors, which are smaller versions of Pentium M and Athion 64. They are used especially for configurations suitable for office work.

Operation system is important too. Usually, laptops must have a minimal operation system like LINUX or DOS, having one of the Windows versions, only when this aspect is specified. The most popular operation system is Windows XP Home edition or Windows XP Professional, supported only by 64 bit processors. Windows XP media Center Edition is the media alternative of Windows XP and it is ideal for those who use media applications.

You must be very careful when you buy a used computer; because you can’t be sure how old it is, if you don’t have its history details since it was produced. There are a lot of sensitive components which don’t have a long life and you must replace them in the shortest time possible.
