You may have some cash available and you need a laptop, but it is not enough for a new laptop, therefore you must find a used laptop in a second hand shop or from somebody who wants to sell it. As it happens in the case of any used electronic product purchase, there are some risks. Firstly, you can’t benefit from the warranty period if you buy it from somebody. That is why you must take measures in order to limit to maximum the risks you are exposed to. Each type of laptop component may have typical problems. A general rule is not to buy anything without testing the product.

For a long time producers succeeded to implement production technologies which assure a long life span to different components. One of the most delicate components of the laptop is the processor. You should be careful with the pins which connect it to the socket. If you don’t handle it properly, pins might bend or even break. This may happen when your laptop is used and you want to change different components. Moreover, you should be careful with the processor body, as it might be fragile and it might crack when you mount the cooler on the processor.

Furthermore, you may observe on the processor some bridges. If you notice intervention signs on them (for example pencil traces or electrically conductive paint), maybe the processor was over clocked, and in this case it won’t work properly for a long time. If the processor or other components of the laptop look good and don’t have intervention traces on them, you should test it, in order to see if it works properly. Even if you saw it working at its former owner, you should insist – in the case of a processor – to test it on your base plate. Sometimes processors are not compatible with base plates. Some base plate models can’t stand, for example, processors faster than a certain frequency. It does not necessarily mean that the processor has some defect, but if you concluded the transaction you notice these problems too late, you’ll have a processor which is functional, but it is not useful for you.

If your system starts immediately with the new processor, perform a few tests in order to be sure that it is stable. You can use the benchmark, using the option Burn – in Wizard, selecting CPU options Arithmetic Benchmark and CPU Multi-Media Benchmark. Select then a cycle of 50 – 100 tests. Alternatively, you can test the processor with complex tasks, for example to archive large files. If during the tests the laptop is blocked or it resets, don’t buy the processor.

I insisted upon the processor in the case of a used laptop, as it is its essential component without which the laptop won’t work.
